Zwei Wochen bis zur Fedcon. Das heißt: Die Zeit wird knapp, um meine Cosplays fertigzustellen. Für Freitag bin ich mir noch nicht sicher, was ich tragen werde. Wahrscheinlich werde ich mich für etwas Einfaches entscheiden, das nicht viel Aufwand erfordert.

On Saturday, my big appearance as a Mirror Universe Andorian is coming up. The costume is almost finished, but I'm a bit behind with the prosthetics. I've completely remade my mask from last year and this time it's silicone, as my foam latex oven is out of action due to water damage. Yesterday evening, however, there was a major disaster: I couldn't get the forehead out of the mold. That would of course be a disaster for my cosplay, but I'm not giving up.

The Mirror Universe Andorian has been my dream for a long time. Last year I even made a faux leather coat for it, but I probably won't wear it because it's too warm. Instead, I made a top that seems to come straight out of the mirror universe. I'm wearing the handmade SNW phaser that I got from my friend North_Star_Trekkie I think it's going to be really cool, especially since I know there will be at least one other Andorian at FedCon that I want to take pictures with. So, fingers crossed that everything works out.

Sunday will be a little easier. I have sewn a costume for a „traditionellen“ Vulkanier a brown robe, a gray skirt with brocade inlays and homemade, individual Vulcan ears. I'm particularly looking forward to the fact that a good friend who will also be there will also be dressed up as a Vulcan. That will definitely be cool.

Let's see how everything turns out. I notice that my nervousness is only increasing slightly. I have no idea where the time has gone.

I wanted to make a mask that was easy to apply and where I could move my face. So I decided to split the makeup into 8 parts: A wig, a bald head (because the forehead piece extends past my hairline), a forehead piece, two jaw pieces, a chin, and two removable antennae for easy transport.

Ich begann damit, meinen Lifecast mit Alcote zu bedecken. Das hilft, die einzelnen Teile des Abgusses für das Abformen zu erhalten. Ich begann die Maske mit Monster Makers‘ Monster Clay Medium zu modellieren. Die Basis für die Antennen war ein 3D-Druck, den ich noch hatte. After covering all the necessary areas with Monster Clay, I added primary shapes - these are the shapes that form the shape of the skull.

Then I added more details in the form of secondary shapes. I used several reference photos from Discovery and even some from Strange New World's Hemmer because I wanted to a) give the mask my own fingerprint and b) add details that Discovery's creators didn't use (like veins and a more angular, bony look).

I had to be very careful when modeling the jawline and chin, knowing that I would have to make cuts for the individual pieces here to ensure that these pieces would fit back together later.

Then it was time for the first cut (and the first cut is always the deepest...). I took off the antennas so I could cast them separately in epoxy.

I decided against casting them in foam latex because I wanted them to be as strong and light as possible. So I decided to use epoxy resin. After casting, each antenna weighs less than 20 grams. If you want to see how I molded them, I made a video on my Instagram. Have a look!

Unfortunately, I didn't take a picture of me cutting the chin and jawline into pieces. Anyway, when I did, the entire lifecast had to be placed in a bucket of water. This loosened the alcote and the monster clay came off, ready for custom mold making. Here I am molding the piece of the forehead.

So this is what it looked like after molding. I made the jaw and chin as flat shapes, and the forehead is a basket shape. I also wanted to put gloves on, so you can see the hands. But I didn't have time for that in the end.

So, that's my equipment for the foam latex cooking process.I bought an oven because foam latex oozes ammonia, so you can't do it in an oven you use for food.I also bought a heavy-duty blender and Monster Makers' foam latex kit, which included everything I needed to cast the prosthetics (latex, foaming agent, gelling agent, mold release agent).

I can't stress this enough: Foam latex is a princess. The ambient temperature and humidity have a huge impact on the outcome of the mask. So I had to make several passes before I had my first decent puff.

I also had to figure out how to get the oven to maintain the right temperature, and I had to figure out how long to cook the latex.This was really tricky. So if you want to make your own masks, don't just rely on the instructions that come with your foam latex.

I used several techniques to paint it.My first recommendation is acrylic paints.I love that you can use them with an airbrush. I mixed a base shade that was identical to my alcohol activated makeup instead of the other way around.

For the base, I mixed acrylic ink in FlexiPaint clear.FlexiPaint is a paint for latex so it doesn't get brittle when the mask moves and the paint sticks.

To achieve a vibrant, skin-like look, I used different types of paint and techniques.First, I mixed acrylic paints with ProsAide skin glue. This gives an opaque and flexible color that is perfect for larger areas. Of this, I dabbed on a dark blue and a light blue layer with a sponge.Then, I mixed a very light blue and a rather dark blue and used a toothbrush to spray tiny dots on the masks to make them look like blood vessels.After that, I used acrylic ink to add the shading.

Then came the hardest part: applying the makeup. I started with the bald cap. Using ProsAide, I glued the prosthetics to my face, continued with the forehead, and glued in the antennae. Then the jawline was glued on. The chin was made to cover the front lines of the jawline, so this was the last part. I used ProsAide Cream to cover some of the thicker transitions. Then I used alcohol-activated ProAiir Solid and Eulenspiegel Aqua Makeup to fill in the pink areas of skin between the dentures. Some details like a blue eyeliner were added.

All in all, I was quite pleased with the mask. Was it worth all the hassle, money, and tantrums?I would say yes.I had a lot of fun learning all the techniques and creating the mask. Let's see what next year brings.

I've been dreaming about trying foam latex for quite some time. I have already tested silicone, latex and gelatine. But foam latex is, how shall I put it?, the classic. That's why I'm all the more eager to try it.

I hear that foam latex is not very easy to work with and probably not very forgiving. That's why I'm a bit excited and I'm really happy that I can try it out now. To make it less difficult, I decided to make a forehead for a Klingon-human hybrid. Then at least the modeling is not so difficult.

Over the weekend I sat down and drew a few design ideas. I have B'Elanna Torres in mind for a hybrid. She is clearly Klingon, but not so extreme. Take a look at the short video I made of it.

Oh, and keep your fingers crossed that everything works out. For the upcoming Destination Trek I want to improve my Andorian mask and make it out of foam latex, after last year's silicone version was rather mediocre.

First, an Announcement.

For all the fans of the Andorians, I will soon make a tutorial on how to relatively easily and cheaply make your own Andorian antennae. And for those who prefer ready-made stuff, there are a few resources from the internet at the end of the article. 

What So Andorian Antennae Do Anyway?

For many makeup artists today, it's important that masks and prosthetics come across as believable. Individual elements should therefore always appear as if they serve a specific anatomical purpose. In the case of the Andorians, it's not like that – what their antennae actually do has yet to be officially confirmed in canon.

The script for the animated episode "Yesteryears" says about the Andorians' antennae: "(The antennae) are their listening organs; therefore, no ears are in evidence. When an Andorian listens to anyone speak, he bows his head slightly to get maximum 'receiving'. " So are the antennae the Andorian version of ears? No, they can't be. Because later in the movies, and of course in ENT, we see that Andorians actually have a healthy set of ears. And why would they have ears and antennae at the same time if both serve the same purpose?

In the book "Worlds of the Federation", which is not canon though, it says: "The Andorian retina consists exclusively of intensity-sensitive rods and is not able to recognize colors. However, Andorian vision is supplemented by the dual antennae, which contain a complex matrix of light-sensitive cones in addition to auditory receptors" (Worlds of the Federation, p. 22, 1989). So what now? Ears and eyes?

Or a Completely Different Function?

The first draft of the script for "The Andorian Incident" (Star Trek: Enterprise) notes that the Andorians evolved from "subterranean creatures." Therefore, their antennae could sense smells and vibrations, which would help the Andorians find their way in low light conditions. So the olfactory and tactile senses come in as well.

In Star Trek: Enterprise, we also see that the antennae can move, complementing the emotional body language. So let's keep it short and sum up: We don't know exactly what Andorian antennae are for anyway. But maybe we shouldn't be so precise about it, because no matter what their deeper meaning may be: They always look cool!

Now let's assume that function follows form and take a closer look at the Andorian antennae design.

Inspired By Insects? The Antennae of the TOS Andorians

In the TOS episode "Journey to Babel", we meet an Andorian ambassador and his attaché. They are the first representatives of their species that we ever see on Star Trek, so it can be forgiven that their design might not have been completely thought out yet. 

Shras, the ambassador, already shows us the most important features of his species: white hair, blue skin and two antennae growing out of the back of his head. This position sets the TOS Andorians apart from all other incarnations. All later appearances show Andorians with antennae much further forward.

The shape is also unique. They are made up of individual segments that are at angles to each other. This gives them a very insectoid look, at least to me. Their posture also underscores this appearance. They are curved and directed towards each other, almost like the mandibles of a spider or ant. 

Of course, these antennae couldn't move yet. That was not possible with the budget of a weekly series and the technology of the time. And in general, the special FX makeup was rather low-budget. But no less imaginative. 

Smart Ideas for a Show With Limited Budget

„(Fred) Phillips (der Make-up-Designer) modellierte die Antennen mit Knetmasse, und laut Star Trek Archivar Richard Arnold benutzte Phillips die Enden von Fadenspulen für die Spitzen der Antennen. Die Stiele wurden aus einem starren Material hergestellt und an den weißen Perücken befestigt“ (Star Trek: Aliens & Artifacts, S. 49). Eigentlich ziemlich clever.  Günstig,  praktikabel, kreativ und leicht zu reproduzieren, wenn man mal wieder Andorianer auftreten lassen möchte. 

Just as smart was the idea of attaching the antennae to the back of the head. This made it easy to hide the attachments for the camera and have them in a place that was exposed to much less movement. So it didn't matter so much if the antennae were particularly light. From my own experience, I know that the more forward the Andorian antennae attach, the more annoying and irritating they are. With every nod, no matter how small, you have the feeling of a foreign body on your head. 

The Movie Era; or: Where Do the Andorian Antennae Actually Belong?

Several years passed between TOS and the first feature film. A time in which the art of special effects makeup made massive progress and opened up all kinds of new possibilities for makeup artists. And of course, the budget of a feature film is not comparable to that of a weekly television series. In a makeup test photo for Star Trek: The Motion Picture, an Andorian woman can be seen. The first thing you notice about her: the antennae had wandered!

They also look more organic, tapering to the ends, which now no longer looked like satellite dishes, but rather tapered off into small curves. In addition, they come out of a kind of skin fold and protrude outward. 

The Later Movies

In Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home, two Andorians appear at Starfleet headquarters. Their antennae are in roughly the same place as the Andorian woman’s, but are far longer and have tips that resemble suction cups. All in all, they also show the same diameter along their entire length and no tapering. The skin pocket is absent, instead they come directly out of the forehead. 

The Andorian god in Star Trek V: The Final Frontier, on the other hand, has his antennae quite far back on his head. They are smaller, about the size of a finger, and more reminiscent of the Andorian antennae from Star Trek IV. But since he also doesn't have the same neatly arranged hairstyle of his predecessor, this is probably a good place to put the antennae in or on the wig.

The female Andorian wears a very elaborately coiffed wig, which of course the antennae are not meant to distract from. The Andorian Starfleet officer in Star Trek IV had a half bald head, so that the antennae could slide a bit further back, which naturally puts them in a more stable position. The Andorian god, on the other hand, wears a white long-hair wig in which the antennae could easily be attached. 

The Next Generation of Andorian Antennae

According to my research, two Andorians appear in Star Trek: The Next Generation. One of them is Data's "daughter" Lal, who is considering an Andorian look as a possible appearance for herself. I will leave this one out of my analysis, as it does not represent a typical Andorian for many reasons. The concept of this Andorian design is so fundamentally different from the classic Andorians that it could just as well be a completely different species.  

In the episode "Captain’s Holiday", a similar Andorian can be seen briefly in the background. What strikes me as worth mentioning about him, however, is a quote from the text commentary for the episode "The Andorian Incident" from the first season of Star Trek: Enterprise that refers to him: "The look of the Andorian Risa tourist was designed by Michael Westmore who used electronics from a novelty potted plant toy which was built to respond to sounds so the plant danced to music, voices or noise.”

So here we have some experimentation with moving Andorian antennae even before Star Trek: Enterprise. But unfortunately, "the idea to make the antennae twist in response to sounds did not work on camera” Too bad we didn't get to see that. Andorian antennae dancing to the intro music of TNG might surely have looked interesting…

The Renaissance of Andorian Antennae in Star Trek: Enterprise

After a long dry spell in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and Star Trek: Voyager, in which we don't get to see any Andorians, the blue aliens virtually experience a rebirth in Star Trek: Enterprise. Here, the somewhat stale side characters become real main characters – which is not least due to the excellent performance of Jeffrey Combs as Commander Shran. 

The Andorian antennae here have once again migrated to a point quite high up on the forehead and have been integrated into the actors' forehead prosthetics. Also, the makeup department apparently went back to its origins here and gave the antennae a segmented look and a gaping opening at the end. 

The length of the antennae now differs between male and female Andorians, with the females' being slightly shorter. It's interesting to note that on the antennae, the makeup concept has been changed. Because although we see in episode 13 of the fourth season ("United") at the latest that Andorian blood is blue, the insides of the antennae tips are pink. Thus, they go along with the colour concept of the TOS Andorians, which I already discussed in the last article: Under the blue colour, various pink and skin tones were applied, which can also be found here on the antennae. The Live of the Antennae: the Andorians' Antennae Start Moving

Probably the most remarkable feature of the new Andorians is the mobility of their antennae, an idea of Star Trek veteran and makeup supervisor Michael Westmore. After much hesitation due to doubts about the feasibility and practicality of this idea, it was implemented anyway. The concept is convincing: the antennae are now also used as a tool for emotional subtext. Shran actor Combs recalls, “when anger came up, they were like a cat's ears, they would just flare back. And when you were curious about something they would come forward [....] We were trying to find another position for the antennae to show gratitude. We came up with a little heart-shaped position where the tops come in and touch each other”.

The new Andorian antennae presented a daunting challenge to the makeup department and production. First, a mechanism had to be integrated into the prosthetics that moved them – driven by small servo motors. The wiring, mechanics and a power source had to be hidden, and each actor needed a puppeteer to control the antennae. Also, I suspect, a fixed base for the antennae must be integrated so that their movement has a counterpoint. Otherwise, it just doesn't work.

Newly Discovered: the Andorian Antennae in Star Trek: Discovery

Star Trek: Discovery presented us a whole new concept of the Andorians – and of almost all other aliens. By switching from foam latex prosthetics to silicone masks, a whole new set of makeup effects could be created. Most aliens now have a more polished appearance. And that's what happened to the Andorians, too.

Man kann sagen, dass die Fühler der Andorianer nun ein Zusammenspiel aller früheren Varianten sind. Zuerst einmal sind sie weiterhin an der Vorderseite des Kopfes befestigt, ungefähr auf der gleichen Höhe an der oberen Stirn wie bei den Enterprise-Andorianern. Und auch, wenn sie fleischiger und dicker sind als die Version aus Star Trek: Der Film, ähneln sie diesen doch sehr. Auch die Fühler der Discovery-Andorianer beginnen bauchig an der Stirn und verjüngen sich zu den Enden hin. Die Enden wiederum ähneln wieder denen der Enterprise-Andorianer, sie laufen in angespitzte Ovale aus , die auch rosa beziehungsweise fleischfarben durchschimmern. Ein Bekannter von mir nannte sie einmal „Schneckenfühler“ und ich glaube, diese Beschreibung kommt dem Ganzen ziemlich nah. Und auch, wenn man es nicht immer sehen kann: Die Discovery-Andorianer haben ebenfalls bewegliche Fühler.

[See image gallery at www.mannvommond.de] The length of the visible antennae is slightly smaller than that of the Enterprise Andorians. However, in interaction with the rest of the mask, they appear to move on further down under the skin and disappear under the prosthetics above the eyes. 

What's New with Discovery Andorians?

Außerdem fällt auf, dass die Prosthetik über den Augen ebenfalls in kleinen Knubbeln ausläuft, was die Vermutung nahelegt, dass es sich hier um ein weiteres Paar kleinerer  „Sekundärfühler“ handelt. 

[See image gallery at www.mannvommond.de] There are small grooves at the base of the antennae. I suspect that this is to suggest that these antennae are also movable and are supposed to be excess skin that compresses or tightens when the antennae move. 

In general, the antenner are better integrated into the overall concept of the silicone mask. The various bulges on the forehead could suggest the course of muscle cords or tendons of the antennae, because the antennae themselves – although they are smooth in contrast to the antennae in TOS and Enterprise – seem more muscular and organic than all their predecessors and are perhaps comparable to a human tongue, which is also a muscle. 

Perhaps one last tidbit about the Discovery Andorians: so far, I haven't noticed any Andorian in the series whose ears weren't covered by a white wig – possibly a homage to TOS and the idea that Andorian antennae replace ears.

Andorian Antennae: a Summary

Along with the Tellarites, the Andorians are probably among the aliens that have changed the most over the last sixty years. In my opinion, this is due to two things: a change in design standards and the evolution of special FX makeup techniques. On top of that, it's never been defined exactly why the Andorians are blue and have antennae. Therefore, the motto: “what's not wrong is right” probably applies to the Andorians.

While many of the peculiarities of the Andorians have remained the same or at least similar over time, their antennae have probably undergone the greatest changes. From insectoid to slug-like, from rigid to mobile, from large to small, from organic to skeletal. Actually, there's hardly a variation that Star Trek's makeup artists haven't tried. 

Personally, I like Discovery’s Andorians' antennae best. To me, they look the most real and natural, if you can even say that about a fictional alien species. I also find the way they are integrated into the makeup compelling, because while in previous incarnations they almost seem like a feature added later, in Discovery they are fully integrated. Their look is just the most coherent for me. 

But I also know that opinions are divided here. But as is so often the case with Star Trek: everything goes. If you don't like a certain mask, you just have to overlook it and take the Andorians for what they really are: Another attempt to tell exciting stories about the human future. And, of course, as a testament to the incredible progress that special FX makeup art has made.

So, yes, I have tried a few materials for modeling. From clay to plasticine to plaster and silicone, there are a variety of options to create the perfect model or sculpture. But ever since I tried modeling with Monster Clay Medium, I've been completely in love with it.

Why Monster Clay is an Ideal Medium for Sculpting.

One of the main reasons I love modeling with Monster Clay is its versatility. Although it is primarily used as a modeling clay, it is also a great option for creating prosthetics and masks. Plus, it can be combined with other materials like silicone or plaster to add extra detail or create unique effects. By the way, I'm also making my current project, the Klingon Forehead, with Monster Clay. Have a look!

Advantages of Monster Clay Medium

First of all, there is its malleability. The clay is easy to knead and shape once it's warm, allowing me to fully explore my creativity. It is also very easy to carve and draw, which allows me to add fine details and shape my sculpture to the desired form.

Another great feature of Monster Clay is the ability to change the consistency by heating it. By heating the wax, I can get a softer or harder consistency depending on what I need at the time. This allows me to better match the material to my needs and achieve the perfect consistency for my work.

Last but not least, I love that Monster Clay has a long working time. As long as it's warm, it's malleable. And just body heat is enough to make it moveable again. Unlike some other materials, it also stays malleable for a very long time, so I have plenty of time to finish my sculpture or model, even if I don't feel like crafting for a few days.

Monster Clay Is Sulfur-free

Another advantage of Monster Clay is that it is sulfur-free. This makes it ideal for use around sensitive materials like silicones and latex. After all, platinum silicone hates sulfur, and latex sometimes reacts quite piqued to it as well.

Spätestens mit Star Trek: Enterprise wurde die blaue Volllackierung gegen hochwertige Latex-Prothesen ersetzt und als ich sie das erste Mal in Star Trek: Discovery sah, war ich hin und weg. Das waren wirklich coole Aliens, großartiges Make-up und ein cooles und stimmiges Make-up-Gesamtkonzept, das sich in die neue Auffassung der Aliens von Discovery perfekt einreihte.

Since then, an Andorian mask has been sort of the Holy Grail for me and I've already tried various methods to recreate the masks. (I'll be tackling that again soon, by the way, and documenting it here, of course). So this article is about the changes in the makeup of the Andorians in Star Trek and also in general how the special effects have evolved over the last decades.

Today this, tomorrow that: the Andorians over the course of time

Since the Andorians’ makeup has changed so much, they reflect well how special effects makeup has developed over the past decades. That's why I'd like to take a closer look at the Andorians and write down what I've noticed. I'll be publishing several articles over the course of the next few weeks dealing with specific aspects of makeup. In this first post, I'll first go over basic makeup. Or in short, why is blue not just blue?

The Birth of an Alien Species

To understand the changes in the Andorians’ makeup, it's best to first look at how Andorians and their appearance were defined in the first episode in which they made an appearance:

"They are humanoids, tall and quite slim. If at all possible, the ears will be played down (taped back?), but there are two delicately tapered antennae curling from the head. Despite their almost fragile bodies, Andorians are a fierce warrior breed ... Habitually, because of the sensitive antennae, Andorians listen with heads down and slightly tilted. Andorian voices are also different... soft, whispering."

So when you read the instruction in the script, you notice three things right away:

1. They have no visible ears (more on that soon, when it comes to prosthetics).
2. The antennae were in the concept from the very beginning
3. There is no mention of blue skin here at all

So why blue? I can't find anything reliable on the Internet. Except a quote from the author of the episode, D. C. Fontana. She concluded the description in the script as follows:

"Andorians are pale blue. Because."

Well, that’s how you score in debate club.

Now, one might speculate that the colour was used because their homeworld, the moon Andoria, is an ice world. Sure, what could be more obvious than making the native species blue. Except maybe to make them white, because that would have given them an evolutionary advantage of camouflage. And after all, humans also turn blue when they freeze. Sounds logical, but it's complete nonsense. At that time, it was not even established that Andoria is an ice world. Or that Andorians come from Andoria at all.

You see, finding a reason for the blue colour is pretty speculative. I would guess that it simply came from the spirit of the sixties to give aliens a strange skin colour (e. g. Orions, or Bele and Lokai from Cheron). And a shining blue corresponded to the colorful world view of that time. Of course, this also saved a lot of complicated prosthetics, because Spock's ears were already almost beyond the budget of the series. The question "Why is the Andorian blue?" is in the same league as "Why is the banana yellow?” For now, the answer probably remains, "Because."

Little Effort, Big Impact

One of the first two Andorians we get to see in Star Trek is Ambassador Shras. His skin tone is pretty simply designed. A light blue base tone with some dark shading. If you compare photos of the actor (Reggie Nalder) with the character you can see that really no prosthetics were used and special effect makeup is also virtually non-existent. Shras is simply Mr. Nalder. Only in blue.

So you could feel pretty sorry for the guy, because this reads like he was hidden under a very, very thick layer of cream.

A purple tone was chosen for the shading, darkening the eye sockets and emphasizing the cheekbones and tip of the nose. A larger area on the cheeks made them look a bit more sunken and overall this emphasized the slender, fragile appearance of the Andorians. The neckline of Nalder's costume was quite low and therefore revealed his neck and the base of his neck. Purple accents were also used here.

One Concept For All

The makeup of his attaché Thelev (William O'Connell) was designed in an analogous way. I'm not entirely sure, but it seems that both actors' lips were also coloured with the darker purple. If that was the case, however, the colour probably didn't last that long, as in many of the pictures I've seen of the two of them, the shade of the lips is hardly distinguishable from the base tone of the skin. All in all, I think it's fair to say that although the darker accents were purposefully placed, the makeup as a whole looked extremely flat and painted-on.

In "Whom Gods Destroy" we see another Andorian in the psychiatric facility on Elba II. Here there were hardly any changes in the make-up of the Andorians. Here the makeup department stayed true to itself. White (rather uninspiredly cut) wig, antennae, all there. Nothing changed in the skin tone and makeup either. We still have a light blue base tone with purple accents, although it seems to me that the dark eye sockets are a bit better blended here and their edges are not quite as strict as they were on Shras and Thelev. Still, they are rather coarse.

All Just For Television!

Keeping in mind the quality of the TV sets of the time, it must be said that the makeup certainly looked very convincing. Even if it might seems retro on 4K TV today, of course, it was well applied and executed and seemed very exotic at the time. It's also important to remember that many makeup artists learned their craft for or at the theater back then. There, the distance from actors to audience makes it necessary to overemphasize makeup. But in a nutshell, as far as the Andorians in TOS are concerned, you can say: blue skin, white hair, antennae - it all screamed "Alien."

The Movie Era: Better Effects, Better Make-up, Better Cameras

With Star Trek I: The Motion Picture, completely new possibilities came up, both budget and special FX makeup-wise. So it's no surprise that for the first feature film, the aliens were redesigned, and so there were also big changes in the makeup of the Andorians. Their forehead got latex prosthetics and the face colour was also more sophisticated. It seems that the skin tone was chosen a bit more towards green (very slightly). I can't say for sure, since I basically only found a picture of a lady doing a makeup test. In any case, the makeup was shaded much more complex, especially also to highlight the prosthetics. Overall, the look no longer looks so flat, but rather has depth.

One Step Forward and Two Back?

But the change in makeup did not always advance. The producers deviated from the prosthetics again in Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home and Star Trek V: The Final Frontier. In the former we see two Andorian Starfleet officers and in the latter the projection of a supposed Andorian god. The skin tone in all three is definitely darker, almost going cobalt blue in the case of the Andorian god. The far more advanced colour scheme here probably goes hand in hand with the evolution of the colours. I would guess that water-soluble makeup was used here, which allows for much better coverage without plastering a face over.

Instead of the highly contrasted shades from TOS, these Andorians had more more subtle shades, probably also with multiple layers to give the makeup more depth and vibrancy. Especially with the older Commodore with the high forehead, you can see the actual skin and pore structure of the actor much better.

The Golden Age: Andorians in Star Trek: Enterprise

For a long time, we didn’t see much of the Andorians (I leave the short appearances in TNG aside). But they came back with full force, the make-up of the Andorians was changed fundamentally. As they played a major role on Star Trek: Enterprise. Accordingly, they were completely redesigned once again. The producers of the series, Rick Berman and Brannon Braga, really wanted to bring the Andorians to the start. But more modern and better.

His [Braga's] confidence that the creative team could give the Andorians a ‘cool’" appearance was due to makeup technology having greatly advanced.

And indeed, it was. In addition to an intricate prosthetics forehead in classic Star Trek fashion, the Andorians were even given movable, remotely controlled antennae.

In my opinion, the more sophisticated make-up only made it possible for the former side characters to now become plot-bearing roles. Even at first glance, you can see on them that the makeup was applied quite differently.

We applied the blue in subtle layers to give the skin a translucence instead of just slathering on blue paint.

The base was a much lighter, more delicate blue applied on a foundation of skin tones. It was also given numerous darker shades, even infused with pink tones. I suspect the pink was also used to distract from areas of the original skin that were translucent, such as the eyelids or lips.

In Jeffrey Combs' photos, it's also easy to see that the individual layers were applied as patches and splashes of colour, a technique widely used to give opaque latex prosthetics the appearance of translucent skin with multiple layers . And, of course, it also distracts from the edges of the prosthetics.

Simply Peaking: Andorians on Discovery

The changes to the Andorians' makeup knocked me right off my feet. One reason definitely was the nature of the makeup. They look alien, mysterious, and deserving of the term aliens - without deviating too much from the usual Star Trek look.

The new Andorians have a variety of silicone prosthetics on their faces, which gives them a sophisticated and truly alien look without the actors having to wear a full face mask.

Unlike latex prosthetics, silicone ones are translucent, which basically gives them an appearance that is much more reminiscent of skin. This can be seen particularly well in the tips of the antennae and the outgrowths in the eyebrow area. Latex is completely opaque compared to this. In the video „Becoming a Star Trek: Discovery Andorian“ you can see very nicely how the overall artwork is applied - and what an effort it probably is for everyone involved to get through it. You can also see in this video that the prosthetics themselves already have a base colour of different shades of blue with darker accents that highlight tendons, dimples and wrinkles to provide a basic depth.

On top of that, several layers of light and dark shades are applied by hand and airbrush to achieve the final effect. Especially if you compare the second picture from the left and the final result, you can see how vivid, deep and real the skin looks and how much the individual elements of the prosthetics are highlighted by the colours. What is interesting here is that the colors all come from the same blue spectrum. There is no contrast here with violet or pink, but with different lighter and darker versions of the same shade of blue. All always very clever, never obtrusive or overdone.

It Ain’t Easy Being Blue

I think in this article you can see very nicely the changes in the makeup of the Andorians and how the makeup artists on Star Trek tried to create an outstanding look in the Andorians with simple means. For the sixties, these aliens were already very sophisticated. But as time went on, the options available to the artists became more sophisticated. And they had to become so, as television technology got better and better (and probably budgets, too). The changing skin tone of the Andorians alone shows what has happened in the last six decades and how much more realistic the make-up of the blue bloods has become. New techniques, new materials and new ideas revolutionized the craft - and continue to do so today.

What is striking, however, is that no matter how complicated the makeup was, the actors always had to spend a long time in makeup. Just getting the skin tone right is complicated, especially the more convincing it is supposed to look.

So, I sat down once and wrote down a few project ideas for the upcoming months. Since it's not sure if I'm going to a convention this year, I have time to spare ...

I think I can't live without project ideas. I always have to have the possibility to do something (or not, if I'm too lazy ...).

That's why I made a to-do list for the projects of the next months.

• Klingon forehead made of foam latex:
  At the end of last year, I got everything I needed to make foam latex prosthetics. Meanwhile, it's all been sitting around for three months and my fingers are itching to make it happen now. A Klingon forehead is a good start, because the actual production is not that complicated and I can concentrate on the foam latex.
• Cosplay "Nymph"
  With the good Rabenschwarzes I plan to do a cosplay and shoot on the theme of a nymph. This should include prosthetics and probably horns in addition to the costume. There are already a few plans running through my head, but it all needs to be thought through in peace.

• Vulkanischer Mantel:
  Ich bin ziemlich begeistert von den Kostümen in Star Trek: Discovery. Vor allem die vulkanische „Mode“ gefällt mir sehr gut. Deshalb möchte ich einen Mantel in Richtung der Kleidung von Spock und Sarek nähen. Ein grundlegendes Schnittmuster verstaubt schon seit einiger Zeit in der Schublade – direkt neben dem Stoff, den ich dafür schon gekauft habe – und es wird also Zeit, da mal ranzugehen.
• Schaumlatex-Maske „Andorianer“
  Die Andorianer-Maske ist wohl sowas wie mein Herzensprojekt. Früher konnte ich die Andorianer nicht leiden, aber mit Star Trek: Discovery haben sie ein großartiges neues Makeup-bekommen. Ich habe bereits eine Maske aus Latex und eine aus Silikon gemacht, aber so richtig überzeugt haben mich beide noch nicht. Also bleibe ich dran und verbessere sie immer weiter. Diesmal mit Schaumlatex.
• Silikonprosthetik „Romulaner“.
  Ich möchte meine Fähigkeiten in Bezug aus verkapseltes Silikon verbessern. Eine Romulaner-Stirn ist dafür ideal, da sie nicht sehr aufwändig ist und ich mich aufs Wesentliche konzentrieren kann.
• 3D model head
  I already have a more or less good life cast of my head including the shoulders. It works well, but I'm sure it could be better. I've been reading up a bit on photogrammetry and found a Galaxy app that can do it. So I'd like to give that a try and then have it 3-D printed.
